In March 2017, Darryl Hicks, Jr. was driving his Audi near Crenshaw Blvd. in the Rancho Palos Verdes area when he hit a Mercedes Benz. Hicks fled the scene. Tung Ming, the driver of the Mercedes, chased Hicks and as they both ran a red light, they crashed into a Toyota Sienna, with the Esphorsts inside their vehicle. Hicks once again fled the scene.
16-year old Jesse Esphorst was killed instantly while his father suffered severe injuries and was brought to a nearby hospital for immediate treatment. Father and son were driving home from a post-game dinner. Jesse played baseball at South High School in Torrance.
Hicks was found guilty of vehicular manslaughter, hit-and-run driving and reckless driving which caused death and injuries. On Monday, he was sentenced to 11 years in a state prison.
Tung Ming, the other driver involved in the fatal crash, was also found guilty of manslaughter and reckless driving which caused death and injuries. He was sentenced to two years and eight months in a state prison.
