April 26, Monday, the jury and Supreme Court Judge Craig van Rooyen convicted Alfonso Alarcon Nunez of 13 felonies, including three charges of rape and an additional eight years and eight months. Nunez, a former Uber driver in central California, was convicted to 46 years to life in prison for sexually assaulting and stealing from passengers.
Prosecutors stated that Alarcon Nunez of Santa Maria was accused of sexually assaulting or stealing from intoxicated women who booked rides with him in 2017 and 2018 in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties. The convicted would drive the women to their homes, follow them inside, sexually assault them and steal their valuable possessions and in some cases even debit their Venmo accounts for the fares to conceal his Uber connection.
The women victims shared their stories of how the violation forced them to seek treatment for long-lasting trauma. One of which stated “I’ll never be able to live the life I wanted. I’ll always live the life of a survivor.”
