April 29, 2020 — Los Angeles County’s Board of Supervisors recently approved a provisional emergency ordinance that requires big companies in unincorporated areas in LA County to provide additional 80 hours of paid sick leave for all their full-time employees affected by COVID-19.
The existing Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA) requires businesses with less than 500 employees to provide the additional paid sick leave for COVID-19 impacted employees. The latest ordinance applies to large businesses with more than 500 employees nationwide.
While there are hundreds of businesses in the county that employ that many workers, some of them may be exempted due to agreements between employers and labor unions or to already existing plans to provide more paid sick leave.
