A 91-year-old man walking on the sidewalk on Lincoln Boulevard in Venice around 9:20 PM last Saturday, died after being struck by an electric scooter.
The driver, James Cody Skene, was arrested on suspicion of DUI and was booked into jail the following morning. He was primarily held on $100,000 bail but has been released after posting bond.
There were two people aboard the electric scooter at the time, James and a female passenger, and were both thrown off from the scooter and onto the sidewalk upon striking the old man. The victim received immediate medical aid but later died due to his sustained injuries.
The LAPD has not yet identified the victim as his next kin had not been notified. No additional details were provided and further investigation is still ongoing.
Electric scooters have gained popularity among commuters. It’s fun to use, economical, and can almost get you anywhere on half the price as the other transport vehicles. However, just like any other mode of transportation, scooters also present potential risks to both the driver and pedestrians. Since these were originally designed for luxury and enjoyment, reckless behavior such as speeding, counterflow, and the like prove to be even more accident-prone.
