The Los Angeles County Sheriff Department will begin to distribute body cameras in the upcoming months with Lancaster, South LA, Lakewood, Industry, and West Hollywood being the first to retrieve them.
The Sheriff’s department shared that the plan has been approved and funded with $34.7M funding received. They plan to begin deploying the cameras in the Fall.
Inspector General Max Huntsman states that the LASD is behind in major technology for police supervision and accountability. The implementation has been made five years after the LAPD started its own similar program.
The need of this technology was made after the protest against police brutality and racial injustice sparked after the wake of George Floyd’s murder.
