According to the California Highway Patrol, a 2005 Nissan Sentra was traveling south of the 101 Freeway near Victoria Avenue at around 4:20 AM last Saturday when it collided with the car of 22-year-old Nelson Rivas, who was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and gross vehicular manslaughter.
The crash resulted in the Nissan ending up off the road and overturned down a dirt embankment, causing two teen passengers, who were not wearing seatbelts, to be ejected from the vehicle.
The 16-year-old girl was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other 17-year-old girl was taken to Ventura County Medical Center for treatment of major injuries.
The CHP has not released any names of the victims yet but did confirm that both were from Ventura County. Further investigation by the CHP is ongoing, while the suspect, Rivas is being held on $55,000 bail.
